Travel rules

A pleasant journey is not only a matter of clear rules as well as common sense. To make sure that everyone has a safe and pleasant trip, we set out travel rules.

Valid ticket

When travelling on one of our buses, you must be in possession of a valid ticket in the form of, for example, a free travel subscription, checked-in OV-chipkaart, paper ticket or m-ticket.

Fines

If you are unable to show a valid ticket during an inspection, you will be fined € 50.00 plus the fare. For the bus, the standard fare is € 4.00. For the train this depends on the route you travel.

Personal OV-chipkaart

A personal OV-chipkaart is linked to a specific person. You may not use another person's personal OV-chipkaart. If caught travelling on a personal OV-chipkaart that does not belong to you, you risk a fine.

Identification

For some subscriptions, you are required to have other identification with you. For example, with a Sentire subscription, you also have to show your OV-begeleiderskaart, and with a JAS or JAS Premium subscription you must show your (Schiphol) company card. If you cannot show this identification, you risk a fine.

A rituitrijkaart

Instead of a fine, you can also choose to buy a rituitrijkaart (ride exit ticket). The rituitrijkaart is seen as an agreement between carrier and traveller. This allows you to finish the ride and avoid a (more expensive) fine.

You must pay a rituitrijkaart directly with debit card and costs € 35.00. If you are unable to pay due to circumstances, you will still be fined.
Please note: when you buy a rituitrijkaart, you cannot appeal. If you are convinced that the fine is unjustified, it is better to accept the fine and then lodge an objection later.

Objection procedure

Do you disagree with your fine? Then you can only object in writing if you can substantiate and demonstrate with facts and evidence that the fine was wrongly imposed. You must submit this within 7 days of being fined.

Mail the following information to debiteuren@connexxion.nl:
  • Your argument: Why is the fine unjustified? Why are you eligible for leniency?
  • The invoice number.
  • Copy of your ticket (such as e-ticket or public transport chip card).
  • An overview of your travel products, showing for example which subscription you have
  • An overview of your travel history. You can request this via your account at www.ov-chipkaart.nl
Connexxion assesses your objection and makes a decision. You cannot then object again to Connexxion's decision. Further correspondence will therefore not be processed.

When does it make no sense to object?

In the following cases, an objection will always be rejected and will therefore not be processed further:
  • You are traveling on credit and forgot to check in
  • You travel on account afterwards, for example with Schiphol Flex and forgot to check in
  • You are traveling on credit, but did not have enough credit on your OV chip card
  • You have made a trip with someone else's OV Chipkaart
  • You have not been able to demonstrate that you are legally using a specific travel product that requires additional identification, for example a company or Schiphol pass.
  • You travel with an invalid ticket (for example, a ticket from yesterday) or travel on a day or time that falls outside your travel product (e.g. student week card and you travel at the weekend or you travel outside off-peak hours).
  • You have received warnings or right to show you before.

Getting on and off

Delay is sometimes inevitable. But we try to do what we can. Together with you. Read how you can contribute.

In the bus

  • Be at the bus stop five minutes in advance. The bus driver tries to stick to the schedule, but sometimes the bus might arrive a bit earlier or later than planned.
  • Raise your hand at the bus stop as soon as your bus approaches. This indicates that you want to travel with the bus. Particularly important at bus stops used by several bus lines.
  • Have your OV-chipkaart, ticket or debit card creditcard ready. This will make things move faster.
  • No valid ticket? Keep your debit or credit card ready so you can pay the bus driver.
  • valid ticket prevents a fine and delays for other travellers during the issuing of the fine.
  • Let the driver know in advance that you want to disembark. Use the stop button to do this. The bus driver can then reduce the speed in time to gently stop at the bus stop. Leave the bus as soon as possible (of course, do this safety).
  • Do not cross the street in front of the bus. This way the bus can leave on time.

In the train

  • Let passengers in the train get off before you board.
  • Don't hinder other passengers with boarding and disembarking.
  • Do not get in or out after the whistle is blown. This causes delays and is also dangerous. The doors will close and the train will start moving.

Safety regulations

It is important that everyone on the bus is safe. You can contribute to this. Carefully read what you can do to make the ride safer for yourself and your fellow travellers.

  • Bus full? Then walk as far as you can. This way, everyone can find a place and hold on to something.
  • Your luggage is not allowed on a seat. Also make sure your luggage doesn't obstruct the aisle or the exit. The driver will determine whether your luggage poses a risk.
  • Do not let children and dogs run loose in the bus. Children are safest seated. Therefore, stand up for (small) children.
  • Put the buggy, pram or walker on the brake when in the wheelchair space. Is there no room there? Then fold your pram.
  • Do not wear rollerblades or skates. This is dangerous in case of an emergency stop.
  • While driving, the driver must keep a close eye on the traffic. As soon as the bus stops at a bus stop, you can ask questions.
  • The trains' onboard emergency switch can only be used in unsafe, life-threatening situations. Misuse is punishable by law.
  • Stay calm in case of calamities. Warn our employees and follow their instructions or call the police via 112.

Etiquette

Anyone could do something that could cause unconscious nuisance. That is why it is good that there are rules. So that you know exactly what is expected of you. And what you can expect from others.

  • Stand up for someone else. A friendly gesture towards a fellow traveller who cannot stand up as long as you (only permitted on fixed bus line 28, in the small Texelhopper vans you are not permitted to stand).
  • Keep your feet on the ground. This prevents wear and tear and stains. Also consider the people who will sit on that seat later.
  • Do not make too much noise. Mp3 player and mobile phones are allowed as long as it is not too noisey and does not disturb anyone.
  • Do not eat or drink on the bus. Water, for example, is fine. But anything that spreads odour, or stains is not permitted.
  • Smoking and alcohol is not allowed. This includes an electric cigarette.
  • Keep the bus clean. This means that you should not leave any waste behind. Take your newspaper with you too.
